Family Migration
Partner
- Prospective Marriage Visa
This is for people intending to get married. Their fiance must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. This visa is valid for 9 months from the time of grant. Once married, holders of this visa can then apply for a spouse visa.
- Spouse temporary visa and permanent visa
For married partners or de facto partners.
For people to stay in Australia (or offshore) with their partner, who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. If after two years the spousal relationship is ongoing, a permanent visa may be granted on application.
- Interdependency temporary visa and permanent visa
For people to stay in Australia (or offshore) with their partner, who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. If after two years, the interdependent relationship is ongoing, a permanent visa may be granted. This visa is generally for people in a same sex relationship.
Parent visas
- Parent
This visa is for you if you are a parent of a child (natural, adopted or step child) who is a settled Australian citizen, settled permanent resident or settled eligible New Zealand citizen and:
• at least half of your children are permanently resident in Australia, or
• you have more children living permanently in Australia than any other country
Your spouse and other family members may be included in your application if they meet certain requirements.
- Contributory Parent
This visa is for you if you are a parent of a child (natural, adopted or step child) who is a settled Australian citizen, settled permanent resident or settled eligible New Zealand citizen and:
• at least half of your children are permanently resident in Australia, or
• you have more children living permanently in Australia than in any other country
Your spouse and other family members may be included in your application if they meet certain requirements. This visa generally costs more but is processed quicker.
Child Visas
- Child
This allows a child to remain in Australia, with their parent who is also their sponsor. The parent must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
The parent acts as a sponsor for the child and can lodge the visa application on behalf of the child.
- Orphan Relative
This visa is for children under 18 years of age with no parents who are able to care for them. It allows the child to travel to and live in Australia with an Australian relative. The relative must be a brother, sister, grandparent, aunt uncle, niece or nephew (or step equivalent)
- Adopted
The child must be under 18 years old and must have been adopted or in the process of being adopted by an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen and must be sponsored by that person.
Remaining Relative Visa
- For people to join their brothers, sisters or parents who are their only near relatives and are usually resident in Australia.
Your spouse and other family members may be included in your application if they meet certain requirements.
Carer
- This visa applies to a person if they have a relative living permanently in Australia and they or a member of their family requires care for a medical condition.
Your spouse and other family members may be included in your application if they meet certain requirements.
Aged Dependent Relative

A permanent visa for aged persons who rely on a relative in Australia for all, or most, of their living costs.
This visa is for people who are:
• aged (age requirements apply)
• financially dependent on a relative in Australia for a reasonable period of time
• Single, having never married, or is widowed, divorced or formally separated from their spouse.
Family members of the aged dependent relative may also be included in the application if they meet certain requirements.
New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship Visa

The purpose of this visa is to allow non-New Zealand citizens to travel to and live in Australia with a New Zealand citizen family member who is a Special Category visa holder.
You must be related to the Special Category visa holder as one of the following:
• their spouse
• their (or their spouse's) dependent child
• the dependent child of their (or their spouse's) dependent child
• Other dependents may also be included in the application if they meet certain requirements.
